BGS Research Fellowship Programme

Science laboratory

The BGS Research Fellowship Programme (RFP) aims to:

  • Attract current scientific expertise to BGS and assist in the implementation of the science strategy of its programmes.
  • Provide an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to conduct concentrated research in association with selected members of the BGS professional staff, often as a final element to their formal career preparation.
  • Provide research experiences that enhance the personal scientific stature and credentials of the Fellow.
  • Strengthen BGS scientific outputs through the publication of the Fellow’s results in peer-reviewed scientific outlets.

Each fellowship offers:

  • Three-years independent funding, normally starting in October, to conduct research whilst based at one of the BGS research sites.
  • A salary will be paid at the equivalent of a research post in the British Geological Survey (£30 000). The salary will progress in line with annual agreements.
  • A ‘golden handcuff’ (5% of salary for each year served if the full term is completed i.e. 15% of final salary on termination).
  • A grant of up to £25 000 over the three-year appointment that will cover other costs e.g. fieldwork, laboratory facilities, attendance of meetings and conferences
  • Participation in a career development programme (funded separately) that might include both technical and personal development training.
