Sandstones of Nottingham guided tour | GeoWeek

Nottingham Park sandstone tunnel

Hidden within the developed urban environment of Nottingham City are a number of exceptional geological outcrops.  These outcrops provide us with a ‘window’ into the area’s geological heritage, telling a story of huge ancient rivers flowing within hot arid desert-like landscapes.

This free expert guided tour will visit two outcrops in the city at Nottingham Castle and Park Tunnel.  Using these fantastic exposures of sandstone we will introduce you to the geology of the Triassic Period and demonstrate the many features that geologists use to delve into, and interpret the Earth’s past environments.

The tour will also provide an insight into how this ancient geological landscape still impacts our modern city some ~240 million years later...
