Vice-Chancellor

 

Professor David Greenaway took up the office of Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham on October 1 2008. A Professor of Economics, he was previously a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of this University, and founding Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy  in the School of Economics.

Before joining The University of Nottingham in 1987, the Vice-Chancellor held appointments at Leicester Polytechnic and the University of Buckingham. He took up his first position at Nottingham in 1987 as Head of the Department of Economics. He served as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1994-2001 and 2004-2008, and led the development of the University's Jubilee Campus, and the establishment of the National College of School Leadership.

Professor Greenaway's current public duties include the following.


  • Chairman of the UK Armed Forces Pay Review Body
  • Member of the UK Senior Salaries Review Body
  • Deputy Lieutenant, County of Nottinghamshire
  • Governor of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research

Previous roles

His previous roles include:


  • Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council at the Institut für Weltwirtschaft at the University of Kiel
  • consultant to the World Bank, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Commission, the United Nations, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and HM Treasury
  • Chair of the Economics and Econometrics Panel for the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2001 and 2008
  • member of the Council of the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Non-Executive Director of the Nottingham Health Authority and Queens Medical Centre Hospital Trust

He is Editor of the World Economy and his research has been published in the Journal of International Economics , Journal of Development Economics, Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Economic Inquiry, Economics Letters and Review of International Economics.

Research interests

Professor Greenaway's research interests are primarily in:

  • international trade
  • labour market adjustment
  • cross border investment
  • trade policy

The Vice-Chancellor continues to lecture on an undergraduate module and supervise PhD students in The School of Economics.
